"I had a deluxe shellac manucure before leaving for a vacation in April. The shellac was not applied properly and I went back to have it reapplied on a number of nails. By day 12, it started to bubble on one nail, and on day 25, I was finally able to get an appointment in YSS for a removal, which is complementary. What followed was even worse. I was assigned to a new nail tech at the spa, Naz. She used a metal drill to remove my shellac, which she claimed was safe. I was very uncomfortable and kept tensing my hand. Acetone should always be used to remove shellac and protect the natural nail. I should have insisted, but she seemed confident. I reluctantly agreed to try the dip, believing, as the nail tech claimed, that it would help strengthen my nails. I later learned the tech double dipped, which poses a serious health risk. I reported the practice to Ottawa Public Health. The advice the inspector gave me was this: never agree to a service that you are not comfortable with. You pay a lot of money for the manucure service and it should always be done respecting health protocols. I know what I need to do now: have the dip triple coat removed. I am awaiting a response from the manager at YSS. I have generally been happy with services at YSS in the past, but wonder why they chose to place me in the hands of a nail tech who is obviously more motivated by financial reward than the health of the client's nails. My nails hurt. The shellac removal was botched, the dip service was unsafe and the results are simply not there. It's just not worth it. Trust your gut. 120$ plus tip later, I wish I had spoken up."

"I went to the Spa to get my hair done with Shaunna and I was more than happy. She really listened to what I was asking for and hoping to achieve. I wanted to stick with my natural colour but brighten it up while keeping it healthy. Shaunna went above and beyond to make sure I was 100% satisfied and happy with the results. "Great location with lots of parking. The facility is calming, clean, and staff is very welcoming. I received a massage from Jesse to help relieve shoulder and neck pain and he was amazing! Took the time to understand where my pain was and explained his approach to release the muscles. I felt much better afterwards, and back to normal within a day of my visit. "I went specifically asking about curly hair, they told me the stylist new what she was doing, she was sweet but absolutely butchered my hair, and her child was at her place of work distracting her while she cut my hair, repeatedly they told me to come back if I wasn’t satisfied, so I feel like she knew she messed it up. She continued sheering my hair after it was styled, and it actually looked decent when leaving. After washing my hair I saw how botched it was. I didn’t trust them after that so I went to someone else to fix it. When I called the owner offered me salon credit also told me the stylist children were always welcome there. Which again fine but like …. Maybe not if they are distracting the stylist while they cut your hair?? at that point all trust was lost and I was hoping for a refund. She told me she would call me back and absolutely has not. I wasted over 100 dollars for a botched hair cut. Do not go if you have curly hair"

"I’ve been going to Beauty First Spa at Burlington Mall for over a year now. I go for eyebrow threading. It’s very clean, staff is always very pleasant. Not pushy. Ask if you want more treatments sometimes but don’t push when you say no thank you. Rutva does an excellent job paying close attention to my rogue hairs. Definitely recommend."
